cups high-quality apple cider

cup thick caramel sauce

cup heavy cream (optional)

oz. spiced rum (more or less, to taste)

For Garnish (Optional):

cup thick caramel sauce or frosting, for rims

cup cinnamon candies, finely crushed, for rims

    Do ahead: Place cinnamon candies into a plastic zip-top bag. With bag zipped closed, crush candies well with a rolling pin or hammer. (Larger pieces of candies won’t adhere well to the rims.) Place finely crushed candies on a small plate. On another small plate, place 1/4 cup of thick caramel sauce or frosting.

    Dip the rim of each mug first into the caramel, then into the crushed candies. Immediately place mugs into freezer to set the caramel rim. Repeat with second mug. After 5 minutes, remove mugs from freezer and place in refrigerator until 10 minutes prior to serving. (Allow glasses to warm to room temperature before serving.)

    Over medium heat, combine apple cider, caramel sauce, heavy cream and cinnamon. Whisk while reducing heat to a drinkable temperature (do not boil). Remove from heat and whisk rum into the mixture, making sure the cinnamon is thoroughly combined and not clumpy.

    Pour cocktails into rimmed room-temperature mugs. Top with whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon. Serve immediately.

Expert Tips

  • Thick frosting can be used instead of the caramel on the rims, and red sugar sprinkles or jimmies can be substituted for the crushed cinnamon candies.
  • The amounts of cream, caramel and spiced rum can be adjusted to taste.

    Apple cider season means it’s also… spiked apple cider season! YES!

    All you need for this cocktail: apple cider, cream, caramel sauce, cinnamon and some stuff with a bit of personality (rum).

    This smooth sipper is all about pouring fall into your mug.

    Speaking of mugs, rim yours first with some thick caramel sauce dotted with crushed cinnamon candies.

    It’s not only pretty, but we’re rolling with a fall flavor theme here, too.

    Heat up the cider, cream, caramel and cinnamon. That’s a whole lot of c’s… but we’re NOT. DONE. YET.

    Gotta add the rrrrrrrrum!

    Pour the warm drinks into the rimmed mugs and top with whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon.

    Then sit down and feel the snap in the air while you sip one of the season’s premiere palate pleasers.

Make the Best Hot Caramel Apple Cider in the Crockpot

To a 5 or 6 quart slow cooker, add the apple cider, caramel syrup, vanilla extract, and squeeze the juice from the tangerines or orange.

Wrap the orange rinds, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and nutmeg in a cheesecloth and secure with kitchen twine. Place it into the slow cooker.

Cover with the lid, and set the slow cooker to low for about 3 hours until warmed through. Discard the spices in the cheesecloth.

Oh my goodness you guys. I feel like this past week I could barely keep my eyes open. Even right now as I&rsquom typing they are burning and tired.

Now, I know that I have a 10 month old, so I&rsquom still in that &ldquotired mom&rdquo phase. But I feel like I make myself rest. Although, last week was a crazy week so maybe I didn&rsquot rest in the way my body needed. I literally feel like I could go to bed at 8pm tonight and be perfectly fine with it.

The last time I went through this I found out I had a big vitamin b12 deficiency and that I was slightly anemic. Sheesh. The doctors remedy &hellip I had to get a shot of B12 vitamin in my butt and had to start taking sublingual iron pills. Hoping that&rsquos not the case this time.

Around the holidays my mom was known for her Apple Cider. She would start it in the morning, throw in her spices and citrus and let it cook on the stove all day. By the time company was over the hot apple cider was ready and believe me when I say it was gone by the end of the night. When I think holidays and family, this drink comes to mind.

NOW&hellip when my mom would make it, she made the kid friendly version. (a.k.a. no daddy juice &mdash err liquor) and I have that recipe on my site here &ndash> Crock Pot Apple Cider.

But this version is for the mommy&rsquos and daddy&rsquos and trust me when I say, it&rsquoll warm you right up!

Let&rsquos start with a few basic things.

Recipe Summary

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ⅓ cup whipping cream
  • 5 whole allspice
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 2 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks
  • 10 cups apple cider
  • ¼ cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Cinnamon sticks (optional)

Place sugar and 3 tablespoons water in a small, heavy saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook 3 minutes or until sugar melts, stirring gently. Continue cooking 5 minutes or until golden (do not stir). Remove from heat let stand 1 minute. Add butter, stirring until melted. Gradually add whipping cream, stirring constantly. Cook over medium heat 1 minute or until caramel sauce is smooth, stirring constantly. Remove from heat.

Place allspice, cloves, and cinnamon sticks on a double layer of cheesecloth. Gather edges of cheesecloth together tie securely. Place in a 4-quart electric slow cooker. Add cider, orange juice, and caramel sauce, stirring until caramel sauce dissolves. Cover and cook on LOW for 3 hours. Remove and discard cheesecloth bag. Stir in lemon juice.


Hot Caramel Apple Cocktail

1 quart + 1 1/2 cups apple cider
1 1/2 cups Apple liqueur
1 cup spiced rum
1/2 cup caramel-flavored syrup
3 apples, chopped
4 cinnamon sticks
Caramel Apple Suckers (optional)

  1. Place everything in the slow cooker (except the suckers). Cook on the low setting for 1-2 hours. Serve warm.

Apple Cider

  • 64 oz. apple juice (100% apple juice with no sugar added)
  • 3 large cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves

Salted Caramel

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons salted butter, , cut into 1/2" pieces
  • ½ cup half-and-half
  • ¾ teaspoon high-quality sea salt

Instructions

Make the Apple Cider

  1. Pour the entire bottle of apple juice into a large pot, then add the cinnamon sticks and cloves. Turn the heat to high, and bring to a boil.
  2. When the cider is boiling, lower the heat to the lowest possible setting. Cover, and allow at least 30 minutes to simmer.

Make the Salted Caramel

  1. In a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat, add the sugar. With a rubber spatula, constantly stir the sugar as it heats and melts, eventually turning a caramel color. (Be VERY careful in this step because the sugar is so easy to burn!)
  2. When the sugar starts browning, lower the heat. Add the butter, stirring as the caramel bubbles for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Slowly drizzle in the half-and-half to the caramel, whisking vigorously. The caramel will bubble and splatter at this step, too.
  4. When the half-and-half is incorporated into the caramel, remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the sea salt, and whisk until incorporated.
  5. Allow the caramel time to cool.

Make the Drinks

  1. The Caramel Apple Cider can be made with a blender or in a cocktail shaker. Be forewarned if you're making this a warm drink, using a metal cocktail shaker will be a challenge, and the entire shaker will absorb the heat of the drink and make shaking and pouring a challenge.
  2. Pour the homemade apple cider into the blender/shaker. Measure in the salted caramel. Blend/shake until the caramel is incorporated into the cider. Once combined, add the bourbon, if you so choose, and stir with a spoon to mix.
  3. Pour the prepared drink into an appropriate vessel (a heat-proof mug or a cocktail glass if you're drinking this chilled), and enjoy immediately.

There are so many reasons to love fall! I could go on and on about the weather, the beauty of autumn. Not to mention the flavors and tastes of fall. Everything apple and pumpkin-flavored and that is just fine in my book.

One of our favorite fall traditions is, of course, going to the cider mill. This year I went on a field trip with my youngest daughter’s preschool class to Erwin Orchards in South Lyon, MI.

It was a fun little trip out into the orchard where we picked some Red Delicious apples. When it was time to go I purchased a gallon of their apple cider to take home with us. Turns out it was probably the best apple cider I’ve ever had, full of excellent flavor. I’ve already returned to purchase more.

Of course, our kids guzzled glasses of the cider nice and cold, very enjoyable. But when it came time for some football viewing one weekend, I decided this tasty cider would make an excellent warm adult beverage. I also decided that my trusty slow cooker would keep this tasty treat warm so it could be enjoyed at your leisure.

With only 3 ingredients plus a slow cooker, you need to make this Spiked Slow Cooker Caramel Apple Cider next time you have a big fall gathering. Perfect to place onto the buffet for Thanksgiving too as it has flavors that compliment the holidays so nicely.

  2. Then you’ll want to grab six heatproof mugs. Then pour 1/4 cup Pinnacle apple caramel vodka into each mug. (My favorites are linked below!) If you’re making N/A drinks, skip this step.
  3. Add 1 cup of hot apple cider to each mug and stir. Some like it strong, some like it weak. I like it right in the middle!
  4. If you want to dress up your drink, top it with a dollop of sweetened whipped cream and a caramel syrup drizzle. It looks beautiful AND tastes extra sweet. Serve warm.

One of the best things about this recipe is that you can make it kid-friendly AND adult-friendly!

Whenever I host a party, I have plain apple cider simmering on the stove for everyone to grab from. If you’re worried about little hands being near the stove, you can pour the hot cider into a slow cooker to keep it warm.

That way, the kids can grab a glass of warm apple cider (try having them spruce it up with some cinnamon sticks).

Then all the adults need to do is pour in their caramel apple vodka and voila! They’ve got the perfect apple cider cocktail.
